Teaching and learning

Cranbrook State School Curriculum Plan details the 'when' and 'what' students will be learning across the year.

Pedagogy

Cranbrook State School are using the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model when teaching our students.  We have separated the model into teacher roles and student roles.  These roles are made clear to students at the beginning of every year and elaborated on during each lesson.  All units, weeks, days and lessons are tailored using our pedagogical model and are visible in every classroom.

Literacy foundations

Literacy is the core business of our school for every student. Our vision is to ensure that

Cranbrook State School prepares literate students for the challenges of learning. It is imperative that students are assessment literate learners and are able to articulate what their reading learning goal/s is/are and identify what they need to do to improve.

Numeracy foundations

At Cranbrook State School, we believe that Mathematics assists children to develop strategies for managing time and money, interpreting data, estimating and taking measurements, giving and following directions, making calculations and determining the probability of events.

To ensure our students will be literate and numerate for life, we have identified appropriate scaffolding necessary to achieve a balanced approach to the teaching of literacy and numeracy. The two hour literacy block and the one and a half hour numeracy block enables the delivery of daily, explicit teaching of reading, writing and Mathematics.

We are currently trialling a Guaranteed Mathematics Curriculum that focuses primarily on the Number strand.  With a strong foundation Number knowledge students transfer this information into the other stands of Mathematics.

Our school does not have an enrolment management plan which entail, sees students from all over Townsville attending our school. The majority of enrolments from outside our surrounding area come from word of mouth about the excellent quality of our curriculum, teachers and students.
